To the Editor – Dear Sir...

    Dear Editor,

I have been an avid reader of your paper for many years. Always interesting and informative.

You cover many art topics and sometimes stray into being a politics mag – fair enough – arts provision and expression are often closely influenced by local and national political decisions.

However, with political coverage comes the need for balance when discussing controversial issues – such as the Middle East and religion.

Maxwell Macleod walks a tightrope with his comment about Jews as “always winning the gold medal for... manipulation” and “being scared out of their wits.”

What a comment! No example or context or proof! No indication if this is about ALL Jews all over the world. His comments about Palestinians are similarly generalised.

Mr Macleod is quite entitled to make his views known about events in the Middle East, but where is the balance in an arts magazine and where are the FACTS.

Why do you print such stereotypes – such a danger in our troubled century?

Would you print the same comment about all the world's Christians or all the world's Muslims?

    Shame!

    RONALD KAPLAN
    Edinburgh

ArtWork makes no apology for 'straying' into politics. We do however acknowledge sloppy editing. Regular readers will know that Maxwell's style is never reverent, but he should have made the important distinction between actions of the state of Israel and the Jewish people. Maxwell did use the term Israelis in his first reference, but sadly not in the second – for which we apologise
